South African summers and post-load-shedding bedrooms have made aircons mainstream. The cheap install you regret is louder, less efficient, and dies sooner than the proper job — sometimes by years.
What HVAC and aircon covers
- Split-unit installations (9k, 12k, 18k, 24k BTU — the most common residential range)
- Full-house ducted systems
- Aircon servicing (gas check, filter clean, drainage flush) — annual
- Re-gassing and leak diagnosis
- Heat-pump installs (geysers as well as space heating)
- Industrial and commercial split or VRF systems
What HVAC costs in South Africa (2026)
A 12,000 BTU mid-range split (Samsung, Hisense, Midea) runs R8,500-R14,000 supplied and installed up to 5m of pipework; 18,000 BTU is R12,000-R20,000; 24,000 BTU R16,000-R28,000. Premium brands (Daikin, Mitsubishi) are 30-50% more but quieter and more reliable. Annual service of one unit is R400-R750. Re-gassing R650-R1,200 plus refrigerant. Long pipe runs, cherrypicker access, or 3-phase circuits push prices up sharply.
What to look for in a good aircon installer
- SAQCC Gas registration — anyone working with refrigerant must be registered.
- Vacuum pump on the truck — installs without proper vacuuming fail in 6-18 months.
- Pipe-run quote in the brief — most overruns are "extra metres of pipe".
- Electrical compliance — the dedicated circuit and isolator switch must be done by a registered electrician.
Handi-za aircon installers list their certifications and show photos of recent installs. Post the job with photos of where the unit is going and you'll get realistic quotes from the start.
